Social Innovation Weekend Waste Diversion

Expired

Description

Volunteers will be trained by Office of Sustainability staff beforehand on how/what waste to sort, and will oversee a waste station during the mealtime (either Olivia or I will be at each volunteer shift to supervise). The volunteer will stand behind a landfill, recycling, and compost bin and advise students as they go to throw away their waste from the meal, which bin to put a specific item in. At the end of each meal, volunteers will help me weigh each bag of waste and take it out to the corresponding dumpsters.

Volunteers will meet either Olivia or Alex in the lobby of the Farmer School of Business. Volunteers in the past have said that it was an easy yet educational service opportunity, and our office greatly appreciates having extra eyes to help sort the waste as we go, rather than sorting at the end!

Last year, we diverted 82% of waste generated at mealtimes from the landfill over the course of the weekend!  https://campusracetozerowaste.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/2025-Miami-University-CR2ZW-case-study-final.pdf
