We are going to improve habitat at Gilmore Ponds Metropark by tackling the trash. Along with park users dropping litter, numerous small waterways wash trash into the wetlands. This trash can become a tangling and/or ingestion hazard for the local wildlife. Some it also washes out of Gilmore and into the canal leading into the Mill Creek.
We are going to cleanup in two ways:
On Foot:
- Those helping on foot are recommended to wear long pants as we will be getting in the bushes.
- If you have rubber boots or waders they can be especially helpful around the edges of the ponds and in the canal.
- We will meet at the Bilstein Boulevard Entrance: 8300 Bilstein Boulevard, Hamilton OH 45015.
- I have bags, gloves, and grabbers.
By Boat:
- We will unload our canoes/kayaks at the Gilmore Road Entrance: 7950 N. Gilmore Road, Hamilton OH 45015.
- I will have a stash of onion bags and grabbers for us to use.
- If we collect and large items, we can place them along the bike trail.
- We will have to bump over downed logs and paddle through narrow spaces between tree trunks and branches.
- You must bring your own kayak/canoe and a pfd/life jacket.
Recommendations: Bug spray, sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle.
We will bring: Snacks, a water jug and some water bottles, gloves, grabbers, bags, and extra waivers.
